En sån där burk är ju en liten dator, med inbyggda nätverkskort, switch och lite sånt.
Open/dd-wrt är linuxbaserad programvara som man kan lägga in och sen kan man alltså konfigurera burken hur som helst.

Ursprungligen skrevs de väl för Linksys WRT-54 (jag vet inte om det t.o.m. var så att Linksys körde Linux på burkarna utan att följa licensen, så de blev tvingade av domstol att släppa all sin kod? jag vet i alla fall att en del företag har råkat ut för det).
